Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers stay in service long after their refresh date, and the memory for them is not always easy to find. NEMIX RAM has 58 PRIMERGY memory listings with 833 module and kit options, covering the M8, M7, M6, M5, S8 and S7 generations plus the AMD EPYC based RX2450 and RX1440. This guide explains how to read a PRIMERGY model name, which memory each generation takes, and how to match modules to Fujitsu part numbers.

The short answer: the generation letter and number in the model name decide the memory. M8, M7 and the AMD M2 models take DDR5. M6 and M5 dual-socket servers take DDR4, and S8 and S7 take DDR3. Dual-socket servers take registered memory (RDIMM, or LRDIMM on DDR4 and DDR3); single-socket entry servers take ECC unbuffered UDIMM only.

How to read a PRIMERGY model name

The model name, for example PRIMERGY RX2540 M5 or TX300 S7, is on the front panel, the system ID card and the iRMC web interface. The letters give the form and the number gives the class:

  • RX is a rack server. The RX2530 is 1U and the RX2540 is 2U; the RX4770 is a quad-socket rack server and the RX8770 is an eight-socket one.
  • TX is a tower server, such as the TX2550 (dual-socket, rack-convertible) and the TX1330 (single-socket).
  • CX is a half-wide server node for the CX400 multi-node chassis. Memory capacity and slot counts are per node, so order one set for each node you upgrade.
  • GX is a GPU server, such as the GX2570 M6 and GX2560 M7.
  • M and S give the generation. The M series runs from M5 to M8 here, and the older S series (S7, S8) uses DDR3.

Type the model, for example RX2540 M6 or TX1330 M5, into the search bar at the top of the page to go straight to its listing.

M8: Intel Xeon 6 and DDR5-6400

The newest PRIMERGY generation takes DDR5-6400 RDIMM. The RX2530 M8 (1U) and RX2540 M8 (2U) have 32 slots and take up to 4TB with 128GB modules. The RX4770 M8 is a quad-socket 3U server with 64 slots and up to 8TB. Speed depends on population: 6400 MT/s at one DIMM per channel and 5200 MT/s at two, and Fujitsu allows the 16GB module at one DIMM per channel only.

M7: 4th and 5th Gen Xeon Scalable

  • DDR5-5600 RDIMM: the RX2530 M7, RX2540 M7 and TX2550 M7. The RX2530 and RX2540 M7 take 16GB to 96GB modules and up to 3TB in 32 slots (96GB modules are supported in groups of 8 or 16 per processor); the tower TX2550 M7 has 16 slots and takes up to 1TB.
  • DDR5-4800 RDIMM: the quad-socket RX4770 M7 (up to 4TB), the eight-socket RX8770 M7 (128 slots, up to 8TB), the CX400 nodes CX2550 M7 and CX2560 M7, and the GX2560 M7 GPU server (up to 2TB).

The processor sets the speed: up to 5600 MT/s with a 5th Gen Xeon at one DIMM per channel, and 4800 MT/s with a 4th Gen.

AMD EPYC: RX2450 and RX1440

  • The RX2450 M2 is a 2U dual-socket server for EPYC 9004 and 9005 with 24 DDR5 slots and up to 3TB with 128GB RDIMMs. Memory runs at 4800 MT/s with EPYC 9004 and up to 6000 MT/s with EPYC 9005, and Fujitsu lists the 96GB and 128GB modules for EPYC 9005 only.
  • The RX1440 M2 is a 1U single-socket server with 24 DDR5 slots and up to 2.25TB with 96GB RDIMMs. The DDR5-5600 listing runs at the speed the system supports, which Fujitsu caps at 4800 MT/s.
  • The earlier RX2450 M1 takes DDR4-3200 for EPYC 7002 and 7003: 32 slots, up to 2TB with 64GB RDIMMs or 4TB with 128GB LRDIMMs. It has an LRDIMM listing as well.

M6 and M5: the DDR4 workhorses

  • M6, DDR4-3200: the RX2530 M6 and RX2540 M6 have 32 slots and take up to 2TB with 64GB RDIMMs or 4TB with 128GB LRDIMMs. The RX4770 M6 quad-socket takes up to 6TB with LRDIMMs. The CX2550 M6 (16 slots per node) and CX2560 M6 (24 slots per node) serve the CX400 M6 chassis, and the GX2570 M6 GPU server takes RDIMM only, up to 2TB.
  • M5, DDR4-2933: the RX2530 M5 and RX2540 M5 have 24 slots and take up to 1.5TB with 64GB RDIMMs or 3TB with 128GB LRDIMMs; the 128GB LRDIMM needs an M-series processor. Also listed are the RX2520 M5 (12 slots, up to 768GB), TX2550 M5 tower (12 slots), RX4770 M5 quad-socket (up to 6TB with LRDIMMs) and the CX2550 M5 and CX2560 M5 nodes.

Most dual-socket DDR4 and DDR3 models have two listings, one for RDIMM and one for LRDIMM (the RX2520 M5 and the GX2570 M6 are RDIMM only). For example, the RX2540 M5 RDIMM and RX2540 M5 LRDIMM listings, or the RX2540 M6 RDIMM and RX2540 M6 LRDIMM listings.

Single-socket entry servers: RX1330, TX1330, TX1320 and TX1310

The single-socket Intel servers are unbuffered-only. They have four DIMM slots, take up to 128GB with 32GB ECC UDIMMs, and will not run registered modules. On the M6 they take DDR5-4800 ECC UDIMM, 16GB and 32GB: RX1330 M6, TX1330 M6 and TX1320 M6. Memory runs at 4400 MT/s with one module per channel and slower with two. On the M5 they take DDR4-3200 ECC UDIMM, 8GB to 32GB: RX1330 M5, TX1330 M5, TX1320 M5 and TX1310 M5. Four dual-rank modules run at 2933 MT/s.

S8 and S7: DDR3 servers still in service

The S-series servers use DDR3 with 24 slots. The S8 (RX300 S8, TX300 S8, RX200 S8) takes DDR3-1866 RDIMM in 8GB and 16GB or 32GB LRDIMM. The S7 (RX300 S7, TX300 S7, RX200 S7) takes DDR3-1600 RDIMM in 8GB and 16GB or 32GB DDR3L-1333 LRDIMM. Fujitsu's default memory voltage on these servers is 1.5V, which gives the highest speed, and the low-voltage LRDIMMs run at 1.35V. Each has an LRDIMM listing too, such as the RX300 S8 LRDIMM and RX300 S7 LRDIMM.

RDIMM or LRDIMM?

On DDR4 and DDR3 PRIMERGY servers you choose between registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory, and the choice is all or nothing. Fujitsu does not allow the two in the same server. RDIMMs cover most needs and are less expensive. LRDIMMs reach the highest capacity: 128GB modules take the RX2530 M5 and RX2540 M5 from 1.5TB to 3TB, and the RX2530 M6 and RX2540 M6 from 2TB to 4TB. If the server already holds RDIMMs and you only need to fill empty slots, stay with RDIMM. If you are going for the maximum, replace every module with LRDIMM. DDR5 PRIMERGY servers take RDIMM only.

Ordering by Fujitsu part number

Fujitsu memory carries order codes starting S26361-F on older servers and PY-ME on newer ones. The NEMIX RAM modules match the specifications of these options, and searching the code in the search bar finds the right listing. A selection:

How to choose the right module

1. Match the memory type

Dual-socket PRIMERGY servers take registered memory. Single-socket Intel models take ECC unbuffered UDIMM only. Never mix RDIMM and LRDIMM, and do not mix x4 and x8 RDIMMs.

2. Match the generation

DDR5, DDR4 and DDR3 modules are keyed differently and will not fit each other's slots. Read the generation from the model name: M8 and M7 are DDR5, M6 and M5 are DDR4, S8 and S7 are DDR3.

3. Fill the channels evenly

Install identical modules in matched sets, in the slot order Fujitsu gives for each processor, and use one module size throughout. On multi-node chassis, order one set for each node. On the dual-socket servers, split the kit evenly between the two processors.

Buying for a data center, spares pool or refresh

PRIMERGY servers are usually deployed in groups. Send us the model list and quantities and we will quote matched kits for every server as one order. Purchase orders, net terms and volume pricing are available for data centers, enterprises, government buyers and resellers. Request a quote for a refresh or a spares pool.

Frequently asked questions

What memory does a Fujitsu PRIMERGY server take?

It depends on the generation and the model. M8, M7 and the AMD RX2450 M2 and RX1440 M2 take DDR5 registered memory (RDIMM). M6 and M5 dual-socket servers and the AMD RX2450 M1 take DDR4 RDIMM or LRDIMM. The S8 and S7 servers take DDR3 RDIMM or LRDIMM. The single-socket RX1330, TX1330 and TX1320 take ECC unbuffered UDIMM: DDR5 on M6 and DDR4 on M5. Each NEMIX RAM listing names the type its server takes.

Can I mix RDIMM and LRDIMM in a PRIMERGY server?

No. On DDR4 and DDR3 PRIMERGY servers Fujitsu does not allow registered and load-reduced modules in the same server, and it does not allow x4 and x8 RDIMMs to be mixed either. Match what is installed, or replace every module. Using one module size throughout avoids both problems.

Will DDR4 memory work in my M7 server?

No. M7 and M8 servers take DDR5, and DDR5 and DDR4 modules are keyed differently, so they will not fit each other's slots. Choose the listing for your generation: the model name ends in M8 or M7 for DDR5, M6 or M5 for DDR4, and S8 or S7 for DDR3.

Why is the memory speed different from what the module is rated for?

The processor sets the speed. For example, a DDR4-2933 module runs at 2933 MT/s with a Gold 6200 or Platinum 8200 processor, 2666 MT/s with a Gold 5200, and slower with Silver and Bronze. On the M8, 6400 MT/s applies at one DIMM per channel and 5200 MT/s at two. A faster module is safe in a slower configuration because it runs at the speed the system supports.

Can I search by Fujitsu part number?

Yes. Type the S26361-F number (older servers) or the PY-ME order code (newer servers) into the search bar at the top of the page. The NEMIX RAM modules match the specifications of those Fujitsu options, and each part number points to the listing for its server.

Does NEMIX RAM sell memory for Fujitsu SPARC servers?

No. This catalog covers the PRIMERGY x86 server line only. SPARC systems use different memory. For a PRIMERGY model that is not listed, such as an M4 or an older blade or multi-node model, send us the model name and we will confirm a compatible module.
