Memory upgrades for Lenovo systems of every kind: ThinkSystem and ThinkEdge servers, ThinkStation workstations, and ThinkPad, ThinkBook, ThinkCentre, IdeaPad, IdeaCentre, Legion and LOQ laptops and desktops. Every listing at NEMIX RAM is matched to one Lenovo model, or to one Lenovo memory part number, using the memory type, speed and module sizes Lenovo specifies. This page explains how to identify your Lenovo system and which memory it takes. To go straight to the products, type your Lenovo model or part number into the search bar at the top of the page.

Find your Lenovo model first

Everything follows from the exact model and generation. On a ThinkSystem or ThinkEdge server, the model (for example SR650 V2) is on the front bezel or pull-out information tab, and the four-character machine type is on the system label and in Lenovo XClarity. On a ThinkPad, ThinkBook or IdeaPad, the model and machine type are on the label on the bottom of the laptop; on a ThinkCentre, ThinkStation or Legion desktop they are on the back or side of the case. The generation matters: an SR650, an SR650 V2 and an SR650 V3 take three different kinds of memory.

Which memory does my ThinkSystem server take?

ThinkSystem memory follows the server generation in the model name. Each listing states the slot count, maximum capacity and speed Lenovo specifies for that model.

ThinkSystem generation Processors Memory Examples
V4 Intel Xeon 6 DDR5-6400 RDIMM (5200 MT/s with two DIMMs per channel) SR630 V4, SR650 V4, SR850 V4, SR860 V4, SR680a V4, SC750 V4
V3 4th and 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable DDR5-4800 or DDR5-5600 RDIMM, depending on the processor SR630 V3, SR650 V3, SR850 V3 / SR860 V3, SR950 V3, ST650 V3, SD530 V3, SD550 V3
V3 AMD EPYC 9004 and 9005 DDR5 RDIMM: 6400 MT/s with EPYC 9005, 4800 MT/s with EPYC 9004 SR635 V3, SR645 V3, SR655 V3, SR665 V3, SR675 V3, SD535 V3, SD665 V3

Entry, all generations Intel Xeon E ECC unbuffered UDIMM (DDR5 on V3, DDR4 on V2 and earlier) ST50 V3, ST250 V3, SR250 V2, ST250 V2, ST50 V2, ST250, ST50

ThinkEdge edge servers take registered memory: DDR5 RDIMM on the SE455 V3 and SE455i V3, DDR4 RDIMM on the SE350, SE350 V2, SE360 V2 and SE450. See the ThinkEdge collection for every model.

Workstations, laptops and desktops

ThinkStation workstations take DDR5: SODIMMs in the P3 Ultra and P3 Tiny, UDIMMs in the P2 Tower, ECC or non-ECC UDIMMs in the P3 Tower and P4, and registered ECC RDIMMs in the P5, P7, P8 and PX. ThinkPad, ThinkBook, IdeaPad, Legion and LOQ laptops and the Tiny, mini and all-in-one desktops take SODIMMs; ThinkCentre, IdeaCentre and Legion towers and small form factor desktops take UDIMMs. Many current thin-and-light laptops have memory soldered to the system board that cannot be upgraded, so NEMIX RAM lists only Lenovo models with replaceable memory slots.

Rules that apply across Lenovo systems

  • Match the generation. DDR5 and DDR4 modules are keyed differently and will not fit each other's slots.
  • Registered or unbuffered, never both. Rack, mission-critical and dense ThinkSystem servers take registered memory (RDIMM); the Xeon E entry servers, entry workstations and PCs take unbuffered UDIMMs or SODIMMs, and the ThinkStation P5, P7, P8 and PX take registered RDIMMs.
  • Install identical modules in matched groups. Servers need matched groups per processor (six or eight channels on Intel Xeon Scalable, eight or twelve on AMD EPYC); PCs run best with matched pairs.
  • Speed follows the platform. Faster modules clock down automatically to the speed the processor and slot population support.

Ordering by Lenovo part number

Lenovo sells memory under option part numbers such as 4X77A94004 or 4ZC7A08699, and older servers carry IBM and Lenovo FRU numbers. If you are adding to modules already installed or ordering from a Lenovo quote, search the part number or browse Lenovo and IBM part-number memory. Each part-number listing is matched to the density, rank and speed of the original module.

Why NEMIX RAM for Lenovo memory

NEMIX RAM is a US-based server memory specialist, in business since 1993. Every module is researched, matched, and compatibility-tested by NEMIX RAM, is JEDEC-compliant, and is backed by a lifetime warranty. Each Lenovo listing names the exact model or part number it fits, so there is no guesswork about module type, speed or capacity.

Data centers, IT fleets and schools

ThinkSystem servers fill data centers, research clusters and hosting fleets, and ThinkPad and ThinkCentre fleets run whole offices, schools and agencies. Purchase orders, net terms and volume pricing are available for data centers, IT departments, universities, government buyers and resellers. Request a quote for a server refresh or a fleet upgrade, or send us your Lenovo machine type and we will confirm the right module before you order.

Frequently asked

Will DDR5 memory work in my ThinkSystem V2 server?
No. V2 and first-generation ThinkSystem servers take DDR4; V3 and V4 servers take DDR5. The modules are physically different and are not interchangeable.

Can I add NEMIX RAM modules to the Lenovo memory already installed?
Yes, if the new modules match the installed ones in type, capacity, rank and speed. For servers, Lenovo recommends identical modules within each channel group; when in doubt, replace the full set or send us your current part number.

Does my ThinkPad have upgradeable memory?
Many ThinkPad, ThinkBook and IdeaPad models have one or two SODIMM slots; many thin-and-light models have soldered memory only. If your model appears in our laptop and desktop collection, it has a replaceable slot.

How much memory does a ThinkSystem server need for full performance?
Populate every memory channel with identical modules: six or eight per processor on Intel Xeon Scalable, eight or twelve on AMD EPYC. Each server listing offers kits sized for one processor and for a full server.
