How NEC memory part numbers work

NEC does not encode the specification in the number. N8102- codes are the memory option numbers for Express5800 rack, tower, density, and edge models; N8402- codes cover the blade and fault-tolerant lines. The digits are a catalog index — N8102-708 is an 8GB 1Rx4 DDR4-2666 RDIMM and N8102-711 is a 32GB 2Rx4 DDR4-2666 RDIMM only because NEC's configuration guide says so, not because anything in the number tells you. That is what this page resolves: each NEC code is listed against the module it specifies, so you can search the code from a quote, a maintenance record, or the label of a module already in the chassis and land on the equivalent.

Memory by Express5800 generation

The letter suffix on the model is the generation, and it maps directly to the processor family and the memory it takes. Two servers with the same number and different letters — an R120g and an R120h — take different memory.

Model lists are representative of the range NEC shipped outside Japan; Japanese-market variants carry the same generation letters and take the same memory. The NEC code on your existing module, or the spec on its label, is the authority.

Fault-tolerant R320: memory must be installed in identical pairs

The R320 series runs two complete CPU/IO modules in lockstep. Every memory configuration must be identical across both modules — same slots, same capacity, same rank, same speed — or the system will not synchronize. Upgrading an R320 therefore means buying memory in sets of two of everything: two modules per slot position, one for each side. Kits on this page for the R320 are sized accordingly. If you are adding to an existing R320, match the installed modules exactly on both sides; mixing a new module on one side with an original on the other breaks lockstep even when the spec is the same on paper, because the two sides must present identical SPD data.

How to find what is installed

Population rules that decide whether it posts

One module type per server. RDIMM and LRDIMM cannot be mixed; the T110 towers take UDIMM only. If the server is populated with RDIMM, add RDIMM.
Follow NEC's slot order. The maintenance guide gives an explicit population sequence per processor — one DIMM per channel first, alternating sockets. A single 32GB module in a 6-channel R120h socket runs at one-sixth of available bandwidth.
Balance both processors. Two-socket models expect symmetric population; an unbalanced layout is logged by EXPRESSSCOPE and leaves one processor without local memory.
Match capacity, speed, and rank within a channel. Mixed speeds run at the slowest module; mixed ranks in a channel can force a lower speed or block Mirroring and Lockstep modes. Identical modules across the server are the safe configuration, which is why we sell matched kits sized to the channel count.
Two DIMMs per channel may cost speed. DDR4-2666 typically holds at 2DPC on the h generation; DDR4-2400 steps to 2133 at 2DPC on some g-generation layouts. EXPRESSSCOPE shows the resulting speed.
The CPU sets the ceiling. An R120g with an E5-2620 v4 runs 2400 modules at 2133. Check the processor's rated memory speed before paying for the faster grade.
Memory RAS modes need symmetric layout. Independent is the default. Mirroring, Lockstep, and Sparing each have population tables in the maintenance guide; confirm before enabling on a partial upgrade.

Why sourcing NEC memory is different

Most of the Express5800 range on this page is past NEC's standard support window, and NEC-branded memory for it is no longer manufactured. What remains on the secondary market is scarce, unverified, and priced to match. What "compatible equivalent" means here

A NEMIX RAM module listed against an NEC code matches it on every attribute the memory controller checks: DDR generation, capacity, ECC, buffering (registered, load-reduced, or unbuffered), rated speed, rank organization, voltage, and pin count. EXPRESSSCOPE inventories the module by manufacturer and part number and runs it at spec. On some firmware releases the BMC may log an informational event noting non-NEC memory; the server boots and operates normally. Mixing NEMIX RAM with NEC-branded modules of the same spec in one server is supported on the R120, T120, and B120 lines; on the R320 fault-tolerant line, keep both sides identical as described above.

Frequently asked

My NEC code is not on this page. Send the code and the Express5800 model; NEC's configuration guides give us the spec and we match it. If the label is legible, the capacity, rank, and speed on it are enough.

R120g or R120h — which memory? The letter is the generation: g is DDR4-2400 (E5 v4), h is DDR4-2666 (Xeon Scalable). They do not interchange. The letter is on the front bezel and the chassis label.

Does the R320 really need everything in pairs? Yes. Both CPU/IO modules must be identical for lockstep. Buy two of every module and install them in the same slot on each side.

Can I use faster memory than NEC specifies? It runs at the CPU's supported speed at best; on the older generations an unqualified speed grade may not train. Match the speed in the NEC spec.

Will NEC support the server with third-party memory? For servers still under an NEC contract, NEC may decline to troubleshoot issues it attributes to non-NEC modules. For the out-of-support majority, our lifetime warranty and support are the coverage.
