RDIMM stands for Registered Dual Inline Memory Module and is primarily used for server memory upgrades. RDIMM is not to be confused with ECC UDIMM although both have ECC (error correction.) ECC UDIMM is unbuffered and RDIMM is buffered. When memory is manufactured, it can be a dual in-line memory module, called a DIMM, while a registered memory module is called an RDIMM. Registered memory modules, which can also be called Buffered memory modules, have a register / buffer chip between the DRAM modules and the system's memory controller. Registered / Buffered server memory uses less electrical load on the memory controller which allows single systems to remain stable with more memory modules load. Registered memory is built with additional circuitry required, so it is usually found only in applications where there is need for scalability.
Usually, the motherboard must match the DIMM type… registered memory will not work in a motherboard not designed for RDIMM, and vice versa. Desktops, Gaming Computers, PC motherboards are usually all unbuffered specifications and will not accept registered memory. DDR3 RDIMM, is a 240-pin memory module. Although considered EOL (end of life), DDR3 is still readily used in many applications. DDR3 RDIMM is available in different ranks. DDR3 modules are available in 1.35V although most are 1.5V.
