Memory upgrades for HP business workstations, matched model by model to the memory specification HP publishes for each system: generation, module type, speed, slot count and maximum capacity. Seven HP lines are listed today: the Z desktop workstations, from the DDR4 Z240, Z440, Z640 and Z840 to the current DDR5 Z2 G1i, Z4 G6i and Z8 Fury G6i; the ZBook mobile workstations, from the DDR4 ZBook 15 G3 to the current DDR5 ZBook Fury G1i; the EliteBook business laptops, from the DDR4 EliteBook 820 G3 to the current DDR5 EliteBook 8 and 6 series; the EliteDesk and Elite desktops, from the DDR4 EliteDesk 705 G3 and 800 G2 to the current DDR5 Elite 600 and 800 G9 and EliteDesk 8 series; the EliteOne all-in-ones, from the DDR4 EliteOne 800 G2 to the EliteOne 840 and 870 G9; the ProBook business laptops, from the DDR4 ProBook 430 G4 to the current DDR5 ProBook 4 series; and the HP 240, 250, 340 and 348 notebooks. To go straight to the products, type your HP model into the search bar at the top of the page, or browse HP Z workstation memory, HP ZBook memory, HP EliteBook memory, HP EliteDesk and Elite desktop memory, HP EliteOne memory, HP ProBook memory or HP 200 and 300 series notebook memory.

Find your HP model first

The full model name (for example HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation, HP ZBook Fury 16 G10 Mobile Workstation, HP EliteBook 840 G8 Notebook PC, HP ProBook 450 G8 Notebook PC or HP EliteDesk 800 G6 Tower PC) is on the label on the chassis, or on the underside of a ZBook, EliteBook or ProBook, and in the BIOS (F10) System Information screen. The generation matters as much as the number: a Z2 G5 takes DDR4-3200, a Z2 G9 takes DDR5-4800 and a Z2 G1i takes DDR5-5600, and their modules are not interchangeable. Tower, SFF and Mini versions of the same model use different modules, so check the chassis too. On ZBooks, DDR4 covers the G8 generation and earlier, and DDR5 covers G9 and later. On the EliteBook 800 series, DDR4 covers the G8 and earlier and DDR5 starts with the G9; on the EliteBook 600 series, DDR4 covers the G10 and earlier and DDR5 starts with the G11. On desktops the form factor sets the module type: Mini and all-in-one models take SODIMMs, while SFF and Tower models take full-size DIMMs (UDIMM). EliteDesk 800 DDR4 runs through the G8 generation, and the Elite 600 and 800 G9 models are DDR5. On the ProBook 400 and 600 series, DDR4 covers the G10 generation and earlier, and DDR5 starts with the G11; the ProBook 4 series is DDR5.

Which memory does my HP Z workstation take?

  • Z4, Z6, Z8 and ZCentral 4R (Xeon W, Xeon Scalable, Threadripper PRO): registered ECC memory (RDIMM). DDR5 for the G5 and G6i generations, DDR4-2933 for the G4 generation. The Z8 G4 also takes LRDIMMs up to 3TB.
  • Z440, Z640 and Z840 (Xeon E5 v3/v4): DDR4-2400 RDIMM. The Z640 and Z840 also take LRDIMMs for higher capacity.
  • Z2 Tower and SFF: unbuffered memory (UDIMM), ECC or non-ECC depending on the processor. DDR5 for G9 and G1i, DDR4 for G4, G5 and G8.
  • Z2 Mini: SODIMM laptop-size modules, ECC or non-ECC depending on the processor.
  • Z1: non-ECC UDIMM only.

Which memory does my HP ZBook take?

  • All ZBooks that take upgrades use SODIMMs: DDR4 on the G8 generation and earlier, DDR5 on G9 and later, with the speed set by the model and the processor.
  • ZBook Fury and ZBook 15/17: four SODIMM slots. Xeon models can take ECC SODIMMs (up to 64GB on the G3 to G8 generations); Core models take non-ECC SODIMMs (up to 128GB on the Fury G7 and G8). The Fury 16 G9 to G11 and G1i 16 inch list both ECC and non-ECC memory.
  • ZBook 15 and 17 G5 and G6: HP lists four slots, but only two are customer-accessible. The other two sit under the system board and are serviced by HP service providers, so the listings for these models cover the two accessible slots.
  • Firefly, Power, Studio, 14u, 15u, 6, 8 and X: two SODIMM slots, non-ECC. The ZBook Studio x360 G5 is the exception, with an ECC option on Xeon models.
  • Not listed: ZBook models with soldered memory (such as the Create G7, Studio G7 and G8, and Ultra) and models whose memory slots are not customer-accessible cannot be upgraded with modules.

Which memory does my HP EliteBook take?

  • Every EliteBook listed here uses SODIMMs (laptop-size modules), non-ECC. DDR4 for the older 800, 700 and 600 series, DDR5 for the G9 and later 800 series, the G11 600 series and the 6 and 8 series.
  • Two slots on almost every model. Install modules in matched pairs for dual-channel operation. The exception is the EliteBook 6 G2i AI, which has one SODIMM slot plus memory integrated on the board.
  • Maximums follow HP's service guide for each model: 16GB on the G3 generation, 32GB on most G4 to G6 models and the AMD G7 models, and 64GB on the Intel G7 and later models.
  • Not listed: EliteBooks with memory soldered to the board cannot be upgraded with modules. That includes the 1040 G11, 830 and 835 G9 to G11, X, Ultra, Dragonfly and Flip models, the 8 G1a 16 inch, and the 1040 G3 and G4.

Which memory does my HP EliteDesk or Elite desktop take?

  • Mini and Desktop Mini: two SODIMM slots, non-ECC. The maximum is 16GB on the EliteDesk 705 G3, 32GB on the 705 G4 and G5 and the 800 G2 to G5, and 64GB on the 800 G6 and G8, 805 G6, Elite Mini and EliteDesk 8 Mini models.
  • SFF, Microtower and Tower: four DIMM slots, non-ECC UDIMM. HP sets the maximum at 64GB on the 705 and 800 G2 to G4 and the 800 G5 Tower, and 128GB on the 705 G5 SFF, 800 G5 SFF and G6 and later models. The EliteDesk 8 SFF G2a stops at 64GB.
  • Speed: on the EliteDesk 705 G4, 800 G4 and 800 G5 Tower, HP's service guide gives DDR4-2400 as the platform speed but lists DDR4-2666 spare modules, so the listings are DDR4-2666. The 800 G6 takes DDR4-3200 and also runs DDR4-2666.
  • Elite SFF and Tower 600 and 800 G9: DDR5-4800 only, even though some HP service guide text still refers to DDR4.
  • Not listed: models whose memory is soldered or whose slots are not customer-accessible, and the EliteOne 705 models, which use DDR3.

Which memory does my HP EliteOne take?

  • All EliteOne all-in-ones listed here use SODIMMs (laptop-size modules), non-ECC, in two slots. Install modules in matched pairs for dual-channel operation.
  • Maximums follow HP's service guide: 32GB on the EliteOne 1000 G2 and 800 G2 to G4, and 64GB on the 800 G5 and later models.

Which memory does my HP ProBook take?

  • Every ProBook listed here uses SODIMMs (laptop-size modules), non-ECC. DDR4 for the 400 and 600 series through the G10 generation, DDR5 for the G11 models and the ProBook 4 series.
  • Two slots on almost every model. Install modules in matched pairs for dual-channel operation. The exceptions are the ProBook 4 G2i AI and 4 Flip G2i, which have one SODIMM slot plus memory integrated on the board.
  • Maximums follow HP's service guide for each model: 16GB on the G2 and G4 generations and the 445 and 455 G6, 32GB on most G5 to G11 models, 48GB on the 635 Aero G8, and 64GB on the 630, 640 and 650 G8 and the ProBook 4 G2a and G2i Next Gen.
  • Speed: on the ProBook 440 G7, HP lists DDR4-3200 spare modules while its table gives DDR4-2666 for the processors; on the 445 G11 HP lists DDR5-5600 spare modules while its table gives DDR5-4800. The listings follow the spare modules, and the system runs them at the speed its processor supports.
  • Not listed: the ProBook 465 G11, whose memory is soldered, the HP 250 G5 and other models whose memory slots are not customer-accessible, and ProBook models for which HP publishes no service guide.

Which memory does my HP 240, 250, 340 or 348 take?

  • HP 240 and 250 G10: DDR4-3200 SODIMM. Intel N-series models have one slot (up to 16GB); 13th Gen Core models have two slots and take up to 32GB. The 240R and 250R G10 take up to 16GB.
  • HP 340 and 348: two DDR4 SODIMM slots. The 340 G7, 348 G7 and 348 G5 take up to 32GB; the 348 G4 is DDR4-2133 and stops at 16GB.

Rules that apply across HP workstations

  • ECC needs a supporting processor. On Z2, Z240 and ZBook systems, ECC memory works with Xeon processors and some Core models; HP lists which. HP does not support mixing ECC and non-ECC modules.
  • RDIMM or LRDIMM, never both. Registered and load-reduced modules cannot be mixed, and unbuffered UDIMMs will not work in an RDIMM system.
  • Large modules do not mix with small ones on DDR5 Z4, Z6 and Z8. HP does not allow 64GB or 128GB (x4) modules alongside 16GB or 32GB (x8) modules.
  • The processor sets the speed. Memory runs at the speed the installed processor and slot population support, which can be lower than the module rating.
  • Second-processor slots. On the Z640, Z840, Z6 G4, Z8 G4 and Z8 G5, half the slots belong to the second processor; a one-processor system has half the slots and half the capacity.
