Micron Memory Guide: Part Numbers, Speed Codes & Compatible Modules
Micron memory part numbers encode the module specification: DDR generation, DRAM device count, capacity, module type and speed. This guide shows how to read them, so you can match a module from a server label, a BMC inventory or a quote. To go straight to the products, shop Micron part number cross-reference memory or type the part number into the search bar at the top of the page.
Generation prefixes
| Prefix | Generation | Module types on this page |
|---|---|---|
| MTA | DDR4 | RDIMM, VLP RDIMM, LRDIMM, 3DS RDIMM and LRDIMM, ECC UDIMM, UDIMM, ECC SODIMM, SODIMM |
| MTC | DDR5 | RDIMM, ECC UDIMM, ECC SODIMM |
The structure of a DDR4 part number
Take MTA36ASF4G72PZ-3G2R1. MTA is DDR4. 36 is the number of DRAM devices. ASF is the module family: ADF and ADS are very low profile (VLP) modules, ASS and ASQ are stacked (3DS) modules, and ATF is a non-ECC desktop or laptop module. 4G72 is the capacity (32GB) and bus width (72 bits, so ECC; 64 means non-ECC). PZ is the module type (RDIMM). -3G2 is the speed (DDR4-3200). R1 is the revision.
DDR4 module type codes
| DDR4 type code | Module |
|---|---|
| PZ | ECC Registered (RDIMM); on an 18-device module, single rank x4 |
| PDZ | ECC Registered (RDIMM), dual rank |
| PSZ | ECC Registered, 3DS stacked (RDIMM) |
| LZ | ECC Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) |
| LSZ | ECC Load-Reduced, 3DS stacked (LRDIMM) |
| AZ | Unbuffered DIMM: ECC UDIMM when the capacity code ends in 72, non-ECC UDIMM when it ends in 64 |
| HZ | SODIMM: ECC SODIMM when the capacity code ends in 72, non-ECC SODIMM when it ends in 64 |

How the device count sets rank and width
An ECC DDR4 rank uses 9 x8 devices or 18 x4 devices, and a non-ECC rank uses 8 x8 devices. Read the device count together with the type code:
| Devices | Rank and width | Example part | Module |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 1Rx8 | MTA9ASF2G72PZ-3G2 | 16GB 1Rx8 RDIMM |
| 18 with PZ | 1Rx4 | MTA18ASF2G72PZ-3G2 | 16GB 1Rx4 RDIMM |
| 18 with PDZ, AZ or HZ | 2Rx8 | MTA18ASF2G72PDZ-3G2 | 16GB 2Rx8 RDIMM |
| 36 | 2Rx4 | MTA36ASF4G72PZ-3G2 | 32GB 2Rx4 RDIMM |
| 72 (stacked) | 4Rx4 | MTA72ASS8G72LZ-2G9 | 64GB 4Rx4 LRDIMM |
| 144 (stacked) | 8Rx4 (2S4Rx4) | MTA144ASQ16G72LSZ-2S9 | 128GB 8Rx4 3DS LRDIMM |
| 8 (non-ECC) | 1Rx8 | MTA8ATF51264AZ-2G1 | 4GB 1Rx8 UDIMM |
| 16 (non-ECC) | 2Rx8 | MTA16ATF2G64HZ-2G6 | 16GB 2Rx8 SODIMM |
Modules with the same capacity but a different rank or width are different to the server. When adding to a populated system, match the rank and width of what is installed.
DDR5 part numbers
DDR5 numbers start with MTC. A DDR5 RDIMM carries two independent 40-bit channels, so an ECC x8 rank uses 10 devices and an x4 rank uses 20; parts with 18 or 36 devices and type letter P use a narrower ECC layout and match the same capacity and rank. Take MTC20F2085S1RC56B:
| Position in MTC20F2085S1RC56B | Code | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| After MTC | 20 | DRAM device count |
| Next letter | F · C | F = registered module; C = unbuffered (UDIMM or SODIMM) |
| Next digit | 1 · 2 · 4 | Ranks |
| Next two digits | 04 · 08 | DRAM width: x4 or x8 |
| Next character | 4 · 5 · X · 6 · W · 7 · 8 | Module capacity: 16GB · 32GB · 48GB · 64GB · 96GB · 128GB · 256GB |
| S1 · S2 | S2 marks a stacked (3DS) module | |
| Type letter | R or P · E · T | RDIMM · ECC UDIMM · ECC SODIMM |
| C + two digits | C48 · C56 · C64 | DDR5-4800 · DDR5-5600 · DDR5-6400 |

Where you will find the number
- On the module label. Server makers including Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and Supermicro often ship Micron modules; the Micron number usually appears on the label beside or under the server maker's own part number.
- In the BMC inventory (iDRAC, iLO, XClarity, CIMC or IPMI). A slot holding a Micron module lists its Micron part number.
- In a board's qualified memory list. Motherboard and server makers often list Micron numbers directly.
- In a quote or configurator bill of materials. Resellers often quote Micron numbers.
What a compatible module is
The cross-reference collection lists NEMIX RAM modules matched to each Micron number on every attribute the memory controller reads: generation, capacity, ECC, buffering, speed, rank and width, voltage and pin count. Every module is researched, matched, and compatibility-tested by NEMIX RAM, a US-based server memory specialist since 1993, and backed by a lifetime warranty.
Shop by module type
- DDR5 RDIMM and DDR4 RDIMM for servers

Frequently asked
My part number is not listed.
Check the device count, capacity code, type and speed against the tables above; a listing that matches all of them is the same module. If nothing matches, send us the number and we will confirm the right module.
Does a faster module work in a slower server?
Yes. Memory runs at the speed the processor and population support, so a -3G2 (DDR4-3200) module runs at DDR4-2933 in a 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable server.
Can RDIMM and LRDIMM be mixed?
No. PZ and PDZ (RDIMM) and LZ (LRDIMM) modules cannot be installed in the same server.
What does VLP mean?
Very low profile. MTA18ADF and MTA36ADS parts are shorter modules for blades and dense 1U systems; a standard-height module may not fit those slots.
