Memory for QNAP small-business NAS — the TVS-673, TVS-873, TVS-673e and TVS-873e towers, the Thunderbolt TVS-h674T and TVS-h874T, the TVS-h474, TVS-h674 and TVS-h874, and the QuTS hero desktop models such as the TS-h686, TS-h886 and TVS-h877AX.

This tier is where the memory decision starts to matter. SMB units run QTS or QuTS hero, and QuTS hero is ZFS — it uses RAM as its ARC read cache and wants substantially more of it than QTS does. Add snapshots, deduplication, Virtualization Station, or ten people hitting the array at once, and memory becomes the ceiling on what the box can do long before the drives do.

The ECC question splits this tier. The TVS-673/873 towers and the TVS-h474/674/874 take non-ECC SODIMM. The Xeon-based TS-h686 and TS-h886 take ECC UDIMM, and the Ryzen 7000 TVS-h877AX, TVS-h1277AX and TVS-h1677AX take DDR5 UDIMM with optional ECC — we list both versions. On a ZFS pool ECC is the better choice wherever the unit supports it: ZFS checksums every block, but a checksum cannot catch data that was already corrupted in RAM. QNAP's part numbers mark it: EC in the middle means ECC, and -SO / -UD give the form factor. RAM-16GDR4ECG0-UD-3200 is 16GB DDR4-3200 ECC UDIMM.
