This tier is where the memory decision gets genuinely consequential. SMB units run QTS or QuTS hero, and QuTS hero is ZFS — it uses RAM as its ARC read cache, and it wants substantially more of it than QTS does. Add snapshots, deduplication, Virtualization Station, or ten people hitting the array at once, and memory becomes the ceiling on what the box can do long before the drives do.

The ECC question splits this tier. The TVS-673 and TVS-873 towers take non-ECC SODIMM. The TS-h and enterprise-leaning models take ECC UDIMM or ECC SODIMM, and on those ECC is not optional — it's what makes ZFS's integrity guarantees meaningful, since a checksum can't protect data that was already corrupted in RAM. QNAP's part numbers mark it: EC in the middle means ECC, and -SO / -UD give the form factor. RAM-16GDR4ECT0-UD-3200 is 16GB DDR4-3200 ECC UDIMM.
