These run QuTS hero, QNAP's ZFS operating system, and that changes what memory is for. ZFS holds its ARC read cache in RAM, keeps deduplication tables resident, and buffers writes before they hit the pool. On an enterprise array the drives are rarely the constraint — memory is. QNAP's own guidance for deduplicated workloads runs to gigabytes of RAM per terabyte of usable storage, and under-provisioning shows up as latency long before it shows up as an error.
ECC is required, not recommended. ZFS checksums every block to guarantee integrity, but a checksum computed over already-corrupted RAM is a checksum over corruption. Non-ECC memory in a ZFS array defeats the reason you chose ZFS. Every module on this page is registered ECC RDIMM or LRDIMM.

On the ES-series, populate both controllers identically — matched density, rank and speed. A mismatch prevents failover, which is the whole reason for a dual-controller array.
