QNAP Enterprise NAS Memory: ES & TS-h Series

Memory for QNAP enterprise NAS — the ES1686dc, ES2486dc, ES1686Adc, ES1686dc R2 and ES2486AFdc dual-controller ZFS systems, the TDS-h2489FU, TS-h1090FU, TS-h1290FX and TS-h2490FU RDIMM platforms, and the rackmount TS-h3088XU-RP, TS-h1277AXU-RP, TS-h1677AXU-RP and TS-h2477AXU-RP.

These run QuTS hero, QNAP's ZFS operating system, and that changes what memory is for. ZFS holds its ARC read cache in RAM, keeps deduplication tables resident, and buffers writes before they reach the pool. On an enterprise array the drives are rarely the constraint — memory is. Deduplicated pools need far more RAM than plain storage, and under-provisioning shows up as latency long before it shows up as an error.

Three module types, all full-size. The ES, TDS-h, FU and FX platforms take registered ECC RDIMM, DDR4-2666 or DDR4-3200, from 16GB to 128GB per module. The Xeon TS-h3088XU-RP takes DDR4 ECC UDIMM. The Ryzen 7000 TS-h1277AXU-RP, TS-h1677AXU-RP and TS-h2477AXU-RP take DDR5 UDIMM with optional ECC, and we list both versions. An RDIMM will not run in a UDIMM slot, or the other way round.

Use ECC on a ZFS array. ZFS checksums every block, but a checksum computed over data already corrupted in RAM cannot catch it. On the RDIMM and Xeon platforms ECC is the specified type; on the AXU-RP units it is optional, and for ZFS we recommend it. QNAP's codes carry the details: RAM-32GDR4K0-RD-3200 is 32GB DDR4-3200 registered (RD), and every RDIMM is ECC.

On the ES-series, populate both controllers identically — matched capacity, rank and speed — so either controller can carry the full load on failover.
