Memory is the single cheapest thing you can do to a QNAP. The base configuration on most SOHO models is deliberately modest, and it's what limits you: Virtualization Station and Container Station won't run usefully without headroom, Plex transcoding stalls, snapshots slow down, and multiple simultaneous file operations queue behind each other. Going from 4GB to 16GB typically costs less than a single extra drive and changes what the unit can actually do.

Check two things before you order. Your model's maximum supported memory — QNAP publishes it per model and exceeding it means the unit won't post. And whether your unit uses SODIMM or UDIMM — QNAP's part numbers say which: -SO is SODIMM, -UD and -LD are full-size UDIMM. RAM-8GDR4K0-SO-3200 is an 8GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM.
