Dell Precision Memory Guide: Every Model by Type and Speed

How to find your model

The model name, such as 5820 Tower or 7770 Mobile Workstation, is on the label and on the Dell service tag page. On Windows, run Get-CimInstance Win32_ComputerSystem | Select-Object Model in PowerShell. On Linux, run sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name. Use the name exactly as shown, because neighboring models in the same family often use different memory.

Which module type does a Precision take?

Three module types cover the family. High-end towers and racks take ECC RDIMM, and a few take LRDIMM. Entry and mainstream towers, most small form factor models and the rack models take UDIMM, ECC or NON-ECC. Compact workstations, the 3460 small form factor, the all-in-one and every mobile workstation take SODIMM. The type is fixed by the chassis and cannot be mixed.

Towers and racks that take RDIMM or LRDIMM

13 models and speeds. These systems use ECC registered memory, so large kits are common. LRDIMM appears on the 7920 and the Workstation 7865.

Towers, small form factor and rack models that take UDIMM

11 models and speeds. Where a model has an ECC and a NON-ECC listing, the choice depends on the processor and the ECC support of your configuration.

Compact, 3460 small form factor and all-in-one workstations that take SODIMM

5 models and speeds.

Mobile workstations

45 models and speeds, listed newest memory generation first. Some models have an ECC SODIMM listing alongside the NON-ECC one. A few models, such as the 3480 and 3580, shipped with either DDR4 or DDR5 and have a listing for each, so check the type of the modules installed. Some thin models solder part or all of the memory to the board, so confirm that your model has user-replaceable slots before ordering.

2. Choose a capacity from the range on the listing.
3. Fill memory channels evenly and use identical modules.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Precision model?

The model name is on the label on the chassis, on the Dell service tag page and in the system information screen. On Windows, run Get-CimInstance Win32_ComputerSystem in PowerShell and read the Model field. On Linux, run sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name.

Why do some Precision models have two listings, ECC and NON-ECC?

Many Precision workstations accept both types, depending on the processor installed. Pick the listing that matches the processor and the ECC support of your configuration. The two types cannot be mixed in the same system.

Can I mix RDIMM and UDIMM in a Precision tower?

No. A system takes one module type. The towers and racks that use RDIMM or LRDIMM cannot also take UDIMM, and the reverse.

What does "kits of up to 4" mean?

Each listing sells single modules and matched kits. The number shows the largest kit offered on that listing. Install modules evenly across channels.

My Precision model is not listed. What should I do?
