Why Upgrade with NEMIX RAM ECC SODIMM?

NEMIX RAM ECC SODIMM modules are engineered for high-stakes environments where data integrity and reliability are paramount. They feature built-in error-correcting code (ECC) to automatically detect and correct memory errors, minimizing data corruption risks and ensuring smooth operation in critical applications.

Key Features:

DDR5 ECC SODIMM Specs
  • Compact & Powerful: ECC SODIMM modules are built for compact devices yet deliver server-grade performance, making them ideal for systems with limited space but high performance demands.
  • Enhanced Efficiency: DDR5 offers significant power savings with its 1.1V operating voltage, and integrates a 12V on-DIMM power management IC (PMIC) for more efficient power regulation, reducing overall system power consumption.
  • Increased Bandwidth: DDR5's bandwidth capabilities exceed DDR4, with available speeds of 4800, 5200, 5600, and 6400 MT/s (MHz). This leap in speed ensures faster data processing and better overall system performance, particularly in data-intensive tasks.
  • Error Correction: ECC (Error-Correcting Code) functionality detects and corrects common types of data corruption, ensuring data integrity and system stability in environments where accuracy is critical.
  • Optimized for Multi-Core Processing: DDR5 ECC SODIMMs enhance system performance by providing more bandwidth per CPU core, especially important as modern CPUs increase in core count. This prevents bottlenecks, ensuring each core can operate at full potential.

Applications: ECC SODIMM modules are ideal for professionals in fields like data analysis, financial services, engineering, and other industries where reliable data processing is critical. They are also perfect for embedded systems, small servers, and workstations requiring high performance in a small footprint.

Where DDR5 ECC SODIMM is used

ECC SODIMM exists for one reason: a platform that needs server-class error correction in a chassis with no room for a full-length DIMM. That is a short and specific list of machines, and knowing which ones are on it is most of the buying decision.

Not on the list, because they take non-ECC DDR5 SODIMM: consumer laptops, mini PCs, Synology's DDR5 units, TerraMaster's F8 SSD Plus and T-series, UGREEN NASync, and QNAP's Intel Core units (TBS-h574TX, TS-x64 successors). And Synology's current Ryzen "+" units (DS925+, DS1525+, DS1825+) are DDR4 ECC SODIMM, not DDR5. An ECC SODIMM fits any of these slots and runs as non-ECC in them; the extra chips do nothing. The manufacturer's specification for the exact model is the authority, and our Shop by System Model filter carries it.

What ECC on a SODIMM does, and what it does not

A DDR5 ECC SODIMM is 80 bits wide — two 40-bit subchannels — against 64 on a standard SODIMM. The extra 8 bits per subchannel are side-band ECC: the controller writes check bits with every word and verifies them on every read, corrects a single-bit error, detects a two-bit error, and logs both to the OS and the management controller. That is the ECC a server or a ZFS NAS requires.

It is not on-die ECC. Every DDR5 chip, on every module including the cheapest consumer part, corrects single-bit errors inside the chip before data leaves it. That is a manufacturing necessity at DDR5 densities, the system cannot see it, and it does not protect the bus or the controller. "DDR5 has ECC built in" is true and is not the same thing as this page.

And it is only active on a platform that supports it. A Ryzen V3000 or a Core HX with vPro on an OEM board configured for ECC runs it; a consumer Core U / H / Ultra laptop or an N-series mini PC does not, whatever module is installed. If the reason to buy is correction, confirm the platform first.

Capacities and ranks

Capacity Organization Notes
8GB 1Rx16 Minimum; entry factory configuration on some NAS units.
16GB 1Rx8 The common factory module on ASUSTOR Gen3 and embedded boards.
24GB 1Rx8 on 24Gb DRAM Non-binary; needs firmware that knows 24Gb DRAM. Ryzen V3000 and Core HX support it; check the OEM's list.
32GB 2Rx8 (16Gb) or 1Rx8 (32Gb) The workhorse upgrade — 64GB in two slots. Match the installed construction when adding one.
48GB 2Rx8 on 24Gb DRAM Non-binary; 96GB in two slots or 192GB in four where the platform lists it.
64GB 2Rx8 on 32Gb DRAM 128GB in two slots; requires current firmware and a platform that lists 32Gb DRAM.

Population rules

  • Pairs. Every platform on this page is dual-channel. Two identical modules; on the four-slot mobile workstations, two or four identical, and four is two DIMMs per channel, which lowers the speed from 5600 to 4800 or 4400 on most.
  • Replace, do not add, unless the installed module matches. A factory 8GB 1Rx16 or 16GB 1Rx8 paired with a 32GB 2Rx8 runs, unmatched, at the lower speed. A matched pair is the clean upgrade.
  • The CPU sets the speed. 4800 on Ryzen V3000 and Atom; 5600 on Core HX; the OEM may qualify lower. A 5600 module in a 4800 platform runs at 4800.
  • ECC and non-ECC do not mix. A mixed pair runs entirely as non-ECC on most platforms and fails to post on some.
  • 262-pin, not 260. DDR5 SODIMM is keyed differently from DDR4; a DDR4 module does not fit. Neither is LPCAMM2 — the newest thin workstations (ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 and its peers) use a different module entirely and are not served by SODIMM.
  • Firmware for the large modules. 24GB, 48GB, and 64GB need a BIOS that knows the DRAM density. Update before installing on any board shipped before those parts existed.

How to check that ECC is actually running

  1. The NAS or device OS. ASUSTOR ADM → System Information shows installed memory and ECC status; QNAP QTS / QuTS hero → System Status → Hardware Information shows ECC where the unit supports it.
  2. Linux: sudo dmidecode -t memory — the Physical Memory Array section shows Error Correction Type: Multi-bit ECC when active and None when not; edac-util -v shows the counters once the EDAC driver loads.
  3. Windows on a mobile workstation: wmic memphysical get MemoryErrorCorrection returns 6 for multi-bit ECC, 3 for none.
  4. The module label reads "ECC SODIMM" or carries the E code; nine or ten DRAM packages per side rather than eight is the visual tell.

Reading the part number

Kingston Server Premier KSM48T / KSM56T — the T is ECC SODIMM (E is ECC UDIMM, R is RDIMM). Samsung M426 is DDR5 ECC SODIMM (M425 is non-ECC). ASUSTOR AS-16GECD5 / AS-32GECD5 — EC marks ECC, D5 the generation. Supermicro MEM-DR5xxL-xx-ES48. OEM Dell, HP, and Lenovo memory option codes for the mobile workstations are decoded on the manufacturer pages; the ASUSTOR units are on the ASUSTOR cross-reference and the QNAP units on the QNAP cross-reference.

Why ECC in a small chassis

The machines on this page are the ones that run unattended — a NAS holding a ZFS pool for years, an edge appliance in a cabinet nobody opens, a mobile workstation running a simulation overnight. A silent bit flip on any of them is written to disk or into a result and found later, if at all. ECC turns that into a logged, corrected event. On a Flashstor or Lockerstor Gen3 running ADM with snapshots and replication, the ECC module is the difference between a storage appliance and a fast desktop drive.

Frequently asked

Will an ECC SODIMM work in my laptop or mini PC? It fits and runs on any DDR5 SODIMM platform — as non-ECC unless the platform supports ECC. If you only need capacity, a non-ECC module does the same job for less.

Does my ASUSTOR Lockerstor Gen3 need ECC? ASUSTOR specifies it — AS-16GECD5 is the listed part — and the Ryzen V3C14 runs it. A non-ECC DDR5 SODIMM will work but is outside ASUSTOR's specification.

Can I use DDR4 ECC SODIMM in a DDR5 slot? No. Different pin count and key. The DDR4 ECC SODIMM units — Synology's Ryzen "+" line, ASUSTOR Lockerstor Pro-era units, Xeon D boards — are on their own pages.

Two 32GB or one 64GB? Two 32GB — dual-channel at full speed. One 64GB runs single-channel and, on a NAS or an edge box, that is measurable.

Does upgrading void the warranty? No. ASUSTOR, QNAP, Dell, HP, and Lenovo document memory as customer-installable on these units. Our lifetime warranty covers the module.
