Synology introduced the DiskStation neo+ series in August 2026. These are four NAS models built on the same platform as the Plus series, but they ship with a single 4GB non-ECC memory module instead of ECC memory, which lowers the starting price. This guide covers the four models, what changes compared with the Plus series, which memory Synology supports in them, and how to choose between staying non-ECC and upgrading to ECC.
What is the Synology neo+ series?
The neo+ series sits alongside the standard DS Plus models and does not replace them. According to Synology's announcement, the neo+ models use the same platform as the Plus series, and the lower cost comes from the default 4GB of non-ECC memory. The two larger models, the DS1525neo+ and DS1825neo+, also have PCIe 3.0 slots for optional 10GbE or 25GbE network adapters.
The name is reported to stand for Non-ECC Option, according to The Storage Guy, which describes it as an acronym and not as "new". Synology's own announcement does not spell it out.
The four neo+ models
Each neo+ model matches a Plus model with the same bay count. The difference that matters for memory is what each one ships with.
| Model | Drive bays | Processor | Memory it ships with | Plus model ships with | NEMIX memory |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DS725neo+ | 2 | AMD Ryzen R1600 | 4GB non-ECC | 4GB ECC (DS725+) | View memory |
| DS925neo+ | 4 | AMD Ryzen V1500B | 4GB non-ECC | 4GB ECC (DS925+) | View memory |
| DS1525neo+ | 5 | AMD Ryzen V1500B | 4GB non-ECC | 8GB ECC (DS1525+) | View memory |
| DS1825neo+ | 8 | AMD Ryzen V1500B | 4GB non-ECC | 8GB ECC (DS1825+) | View memory |
The DS1525neo+ and DS1825neo+ ship with half the memory of their Plus counterparts (4GB against 8GB), so they are the models most likely to need an upgrade.
What memory does the neo+ use?
All four models use DDR4 SODIMM memory in two slots, with a maximum of 32GB (2 x 16GB). The Ryzen processors in these systems run memory at up to DDR4-2400, so faster DDR4-3200 modules clock down automatically.
Synology lists these memory parts for the neo+ models:
- D4NS01-4G, a 4GB non-ECC module, which is what ships in the box.
- D4ES04-4G, D4ES03-8G and D4ES03-16G, which are 4GB, 8GB and 16GB ECC modules.
Two rules apply. Synology states that mixing non-ECC and ECC modules is not officially supported, and when you fit more than one module they must be identical. In practice that means a neo+ upgrade is either a second matching non-ECC module or a full switch to ECC.
Your upgrade options
- Stay non-ECC and add a second 4GB module. The only non-ECC module Synology lists is the 4GB D4NS01-4G, so this path ends at 8GB in total.
- Switch to ECC. Remove the factory non-ECC module and fit ECC modules instead. Synology's ECC list goes up to 16GB per slot, so two modules reach the 32GB maximum. The factory module becomes a spare.
The ECC path is the one that scales. NEMIX RAM sells DDR4-3200 ECC SODIMM modules in 8GB and 16GB sizes for each neo+ model. They cross-reference Synology part numbers D4ES03-8G, D4ES03-16G and D4ES04-4G, and each listing is matched to the model. Prices below were taken from the live listings on October 27, 2026.
| Option | What you get | NEMIX price |
|---|---|---|
| 8GB (1 x 8GB) | ECC SODIMM, replaces the factory 4GB module, one slot left empty | $99.99 |
| 16GB (2 x 8GB) | Two matched 8GB ECC modules, both slots filled | $198.99 |
| 16GB (1 x 16GB) | One 16GB ECC module, one slot left empty | $158.88 |
| 32GB (2 x 16GB) | Two matched 16GB ECC modules, the maximum | $317.49 |
How to upgrade the memory
- Shut the NAS down from DSM and unplug it.
- Open the unit and find the memory slots. Access differs between the 2-bay, 4-bay, 5-bay and 8-bay models, so follow Synology's instructions for your model. Our Synology ECC SODIMM install guide covers the DiskStation family.
- Remove the factory 4GB non-ECC module if you are moving to ECC. Do not leave it in beside ECC modules.
- Fit identical modules and close the unit.
- Power on and check DSM. The Info Center shows the installed memory and whether it is ECC.
Is ECC worth it on a NAS?
ECC memory can detect and correct certain memory errors, and non-ECC memory cannot. Non-ECC memory is common in consumer computers and many NAS systems, and for a home media server it is often enough. If the NAS holds business files, backups, virtual machines or anything you cannot easily recreate, ECC adds a layer of protection for a modest cost, and it is the path Synology's supported list takes beyond 8GB.

Frequently asked questions
What does neo+ mean on a Synology NAS?
It marks a lower-cost version of a Plus model that ships with 4GB of non-ECC memory. The name is reported to stand for Non-ECC Option.
How much memory can a Synology neo+ take?
All four models take up to 32GB, as two 16GB ECC modules. If you stay with non-ECC memory, Synology lists only the 4GB module, so the total is 8GB.
Can I mix the factory non-ECC module with ECC memory?
No. Synology states that mixing non-ECC and ECC modules is not officially supported. Replace the factory module when you fit ECC.
Which neo+ models need a memory upgrade most?
The DS1525neo+ and DS1825neo+, because they ship with 4GB while their Plus counterparts ship with 8GB.
Do all four models use the same memory?
Yes. All four use DDR4 SODIMM modules, and the same Synology part numbers apply.
