Short answer: MSI uses four different kinds of memory across its range. Current desktop motherboards take DDR5 UDIMM, older and budget boards take DDR4 UDIMM, laptops, mini PCs and all-in-ones take SODIMM, and servers take ECC RDIMM. The right module depends on your exact model, and some MSI models ship in both a DDR5 and a DDR4 version under almost the same name. This guide shows how to tell which one you have, and links to the matching NEMIX RAM listing for every MSI model we cover: 453 listings across motherboards, business PCs, industrial systems and servers.

Find your MSI model first

  • Motherboards: the model name is printed on the board between the memory slots, on the box, and on the BIOS main screen (for example MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI).
  • Laptops, mini PCs and all-in-ones: the model is on the label underneath or on the back (for example Modern 14 F13M or Cubi NUC 1M).
  • Industrial systems: the MS- number is on the label or board (for example MS-C907 or MS-CF02).
  • Servers: the model is on the system label and order paperwork (for example S5062X270RAU8 or G4101-01).

Type that name into the search bar at the top of any page on nemixram.com, or use the tables below.

MSI motherboard memory by platform

We cover 300 MSI desktop motherboards, one listing per board. Each listing is sized to that board: the module sizes stay within MSI's maximum capacity divided by the number of slots, and the kits never exceed the number of slots.

DDR5 and DDR4 versions of the same board

MSI sold many LGA1700 boards in two versions. The DDR4 version has "DDR4" at the end of the model name, for example PRO Z790-A WIFI and PRO Z790-A WIFI DDR4. We list both versions separately. If the name on your board does not end in DDR4, it takes DDR5.

About memory speed

MSI boxes list overclocked speeds such as DDR5-8000+ that require XMP or EXPO. NEMIX modules run at their standard JEDEC speed (DDR5-5600 or DDR4-3200), or at the lower speed the processor and board support without overclocking. Where MSI rates a board below 5600MT/s, the listing says the speed the modules run at. This is normal and does not affect compatibility.

MSI business laptops, mini PCs and all-in-ones

MSI's business range uses compact SODIMM modules in laptops, mini PCs and all-in-ones, and full-size UDIMM in the PRO DP towers. Models with soldered memory (current Prestige laptops, for example) cannot be upgraded and are not listed.

Type MSI series Memory Examples
Business laptops Modern, Commercial, Venture and VenturePro DDR5 SODIMM; DDR4 SODIMM on the DDR4 versions Modern 14 / 15 F13M (DDR5) · Modern 14 / 15 F13M (DDR4) · Venture 16 AI A2HM

Several models, such as the Commercial 14 / 15 B1M and Modern 14 / 15 F13M, ship with either DDR5 or DDR4. Check the installed memory type before ordering; each listing explains how.

MSI industrial boards and box PCs

MSI IPC systems run in factories, kiosks and signage for years, so they often use ECC memory and older memory generations. Match the generation and ECC type to your MS- model exactly.

Model Memory
MS-C907 box PC DDR5 non-ECC SODIMM
MS-C902 box PC DDR4 non-ECC SODIMM
MS-CF02 industrial board (non-ECC version) DDR4 ECC or non-ECC SODIMM

For servers, populate every memory channel evenly on each processor, and use identical modules throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Will DDR4 memory work in a DDR5 MSI motherboard?

No. DDR5 and DDR4 modules are keyed differently and do not fit each other's slots. Several MSI boards come in both versions under almost the same name; the DDR4 version has "DDR4" in its model name.

My MSI board lists DDR5-8000 or faster. Why are these modules DDR5-5600?

The high speeds on the box are overclocking figures that need XMP or EXPO. Our modules run at their standard JEDEC speed, or at the lower speed the processor and board support without overclocking. Each listing states the speed on that board.

How much memory can I install in my MSI board or system?

Each listing shows the number of slots and MSI's maximum capacity, and it only offers module sizes and kits that fit. Stay within that maximum and use identical modules.

How do I tell whether my MSI PC uses DDR4 or DDR5?

Check the model name on the board or system label first. In Windows, Task Manager shows the memory type under Performance, then Memory. If you are still not sure, send us the model name and we will confirm it.

Do MSI servers need ECC memory?

Most MSI servers use ECC RDIMM. The entry platforms (AMD EPYC 4004/4005 servers, the D3051 boards and several network appliances) accept ECC or non-ECC unbuffered memory; choose one type and do not mix them.

Can I buy MSI memory for a whole office or fleet?

Yes. Purchase orders, net terms and volume pricing are available for IT departments, integrators, schools and government buyers. Request a quote with your model list.
