The ASUS Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE is an EEB workstation board for Threadripper PRO 9000 WX and 7000 WX processors, with eight DDR5 slots. This guide covers what memory it accepts, which slots to fill, what ASUS publishes on its tested memory list, and how to buy a set that fits.

The short answer

  • Memory type: DDR5 ECC registered DIMMs (RDIMM), eight slots, eight channels.
  • Capacity: ASUS lists support for up to 2TB of ECC RDIMM at one module per channel.
  • Fill order: A1 through H1. Use all eight for full bandwidth.
  • Check the ASUS CPU and memory support lists for your processor and module before you buy.

Which slots to fill

The ASUS manual gives a recommended population by module count. Each slot is its own channel, so the number of modules is the number of channels working.

Modules installed Slots to fill Channels in use
1 A1 1
2 A1, B1 2
4 A1, B1, C1, D1 4
6 A1 through F1 6
8 A1 through H1 8

Six modules is listed, but it leaves two channels idle. For a workstation that needs bandwidth, install eight identical modules. The compatible RAM guide shows how to read a manual like this one.

What the ASUS memory list contains

ASUS publishes a qualified vendor list (QVL) for this board. On the day we read it, it listed 20 tested kits of ECC RDIMM for Threadripper PRO 7000 WX and 9000 WX. The entries are modules from 16GB up to 48GB in single, four and eight module kits, from vendors that include G.SKILL, V-color and ADATA. A few examples:

Vendor Kit Total Speed Profile
V-color TRA532G72D834Q, 4 x 32GB 128GB 7200 EXPO
G.SKILL F5-6800R3445G32GE8-G5N, 8 x 32GB 256GB 6800 EXPO
ADATA AX5R7200C3416G-B, 1 x 16GB 16GB 7200 XMP

Two things are worth noting. First, the listed kits are rated well above the platform's standard speeds, and ASUS warns that the system may not reach the maximum supported speed because of platform limits. Second, a QVL is a list of what ASUS tested, not a limit on what works. Kingston, for example, lists DDR5 ECC RDIMM for this board in 16GB to 96GB modules, and says the processors support up to 5200 MT/s without overclocking.

Rules for a clean install

  • Use eight identical modules for eight channel operation. Kingston recommends identical groups of eight, or two identical four module kits.
  • Do not mix x4 and x8 modules, and do not mix speeds, timings or voltages, per Kingston.
  • Match CAS latency and, where you can, the version or date code from the same vendor, as the ASUS manual advises.
  • Keep DDR4 out. The manual notes the notch is different, and older modules must not go in a DDR5 slot.
  • Cool the memory if you run it hard. ASUS suggests better memory cooling for stability under full load or overclocking.

Choosing a size

Divide the total memory you need by eight to find the module size. Eight 32GB modules make 256GB, and eight 64GB modules make 512GB. For help with the total, see how much RAM an AI workstation needs. For the platform in general, see the WRX90 RAM guide and the WRX90 motherboard comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What memory does the ASUS Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE use?

DDR5 ECC registered DIMMs (RDIMM) in eight slots. ASUS lists support for up to 2TB at one module per channel.

Which slots should I fill on the WRX90E-SAGE SE?

Fill A1 through H1 for eight modules. With fewer modules, the ASUS manual lists A1 for one, A1 and B1 for two, A1 to D1 for four and A1 to F1 for six.

Is memory not on the ASUS QVL safe to use?

It can work. The QVL lists what ASUS tested, not every module that runs. Use ECC RDIMM that is listed for the board or the platform, and check the ASUS CPU and memory support lists first.

Can I mix module sizes on this board?

The manual says mixed sizes are allowed in general, but for eight channel operation on this platform use eight identical modules, as Kingston recommends.

Does NEMIX RAM list memory for the WRX90E-SAGE SE?

Yes. We list DDR5 ECC RDIMM for this board, in standard, DDR5-5600 and DDR5-6400 listings. Send us your processor and we will confirm the best match.
