Short answer: ASUS desktop motherboards use non-ECC unbuffered memory (UDIMM): DDR5 on AM5 and LGA 1851 boards, DDR5 or DDR4 on LGA 1700 boards depending on the model, and DDR4 on AM4 and older Intel boards. Many ASUS AMD boards, from ROG and TUF Gaming to Prime and ProArt, also accept ECC UDIMM with a supporting processor. ASUS Pro WS workstation boards use registered ECC memory (RDIMM) or ECC UDIMM by platform, and ASUS servers use ECC RDIMM or ECC UDIMM. This guide shows how to read your model name and links to matching NEMIX RAM listings across more than 900 ASUS motherboards, workstation boards and servers.

Find your ASUS model first

The model name is printed on the motherboard between the memory slots and the PCIe slots, and on the box. ASUS names boards by series and chipset: ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI is a ROG Strix board on the AMD X870E chipset; TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS D4 is a TUF Gaming board on Intel Z790 that takes DDR4. Read every part of the name. "D4" means DDR4. "II" marks a revised board with its own listing. "-CSM" marks the Corporate Stable Model version, which takes the same memory as the standard board. ASUS server names start with the line: RS for rackmount, ESC for GPU servers, EG for edge and TS for tower. Type the model name into the search bar at the top of any page on nemixram.com, or use the tables below.

ECC memory on ASUS desktop boards

177 NEMIX RAM listings cover ASUS desktop boards whose specification lists ECC support, mostly on AM5 and AM4. ECC (error-correcting code) memory detects and corrects single-bit errors, which protects long renders, simulations, home-lab servers and small-business systems from silent data corruption. Three things to check before you buy:

  • Processor support: ECC works only with a processor that supports it. On Ryzen, support varies by model, and APUs (G-series) generally need a PRO version.
  • Type: these boards take unbuffered ECC (ECC UDIMM), not registered server memory. See DDR5 ECC UDIMM and DDR4 ECC UDIMM.
  • Do not mix ECC and non-ECC modules. Each ECC listing links to the non-ECC listing for the same board.

All 177 are in ECC memory for ASUS motherboards. Examples: ROG STRIX X870E-E GAMING WIFI (ECC) · TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI (ECC) · TUF GAMING B850-PLUS WIFI (ECC) · ProArt X870E-CREATOR WIFI (ECC).

Which type of memory does my ASUS board or server use?

  • Non-ECC UDIMM: standard desktop memory for ROG, TUF Gaming, Prime, ProArt and CSM boards. See DDR5 UDIMM and DDR4 UDIMM.
  • ECC UDIMM: unbuffered ECC memory for supported AMD desktop boards, W880 / W680 / W480 / C246 workstation boards and Xeon E servers. See DDR5 ECC UDIMM.
  • ECC RDIMM: registered memory for Pro WS W790, WRX90E, TRX50 and W890 boards, and ASUS EPYC and Xeon Scalable servers. See DDR5 RDIMM and DDR4 RDIMM.
  • LRDIMM: load-reduced DDR4 modules for maximum capacity on supported C621, C422 and WRX80E platforms. See DDR4 LRDIMM. Do not mix with RDIMM.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell whether my ASUS board takes DDR5 or DDR4?

Check the exact model name. AM5 and LGA 1851 boards take DDR5 only. On LGA 1700, a board with "D4" in its name takes DDR4 and the same board without "D4" takes DDR5; the two versions are not interchangeable. AM4, LGA 1200, LGA 1151, X299, X399 and TRX40 boards take DDR4.

Can I use ECC memory on an ASUS AM5 or AM4 motherboard?

Many ASUS AMD boards list ECC support, but ECC works only with a processor that supports it. On Ryzen, support varies by model, and APUs (G-series) generally need a PRO version. Where a board supports both, we list ECC UDIMM and non-ECC UDIMM separately and link the two listings. Do not mix ECC and non-ECC modules.

My ROG board lists DDR5-8000. Why are the modules DDR5-5600?

ASUS ratings above the JEDEC standard are overclocked (XMP or EXPO) speeds that depend on the processor and the board. NEMIX RAM modules are JEDEC-standard DDR5-5600 or DDR4-3200 and run at the speed your processor supports, without tuning.

Does a CSM board take the same memory as the standard model?

Yes. A CSM board shares its hardware with the standard model, so where both are listed they share one listing.

Which memory does an ASUS Pro WS workstation board use?

It depends on the platform. W790, WRX90E, TRX50, W890, WRX80E, C621 and C422 boards take registered ECC memory (RDIMM). W880, W680, W480, C246 and similar boards take unbuffered memory, ECC or non-ECC. X299 and Z-series WS boards take non-ECC UDIMM. Registered and unbuffered modules are not interchangeable.

Can I order memory for a fleet of ASUS PCs or several servers?

Yes. Purchase orders, net terms and volume pricing are available for businesses, schools, labs, government buyers and resellers. Request a quote with your model list and quantities.
