DDR5 ECC UDIMM Specs

Error-Correcting Code (ECC): NEMIX RAM ECC UDIMM modules come equipped with ECC technology, which detects and corrects data errors in real-time. This feature is essential for maintaining data integrity and reliability, particularly in environments where data accuracy is paramount.

Enhanced Performance: Our DDR5 ECC UDIMM memory delivers twice the performance of DDR4, with speeds ranging from 4800 to 6400 MT/s. This upgrade significantly enhances overall system performance, ensuring that even the most demanding applications run smoothly.

Improved Efficiency: Operating at just 1.1V, DDR5 ECC UDIMM include an on-DIMM 12V voltage regulator (PMIC) to boost power efficiency. This design reduces power consumption, making your system more energy-efficient without compromising on performance.

Superior Bandwidth: DDR5 technology provides increased bandwidth per CPU core, making it ideal for data-intensive tasks. With DDR5-5600MHz memory, for example, users can maintain optimal bandwidth across multiple CPU cores, ensuring that performance scales with your system's needs.

Faster Speeds: DDR5 ECC UDIMM modules start at a minimum speed of 4800MHz, which is over 50% faster than the maximum speeds offered by DDR4. This leap in speed, combined with improved channel and power efficiency, makes DDR5 ECC UDIMM memory the perfect choice for applications that demand high data throughput and reliability.

Stable and Reliable: Built with quality and durability in mind, NEMIX RAM ECC UDIMM memory kits are rigorously tested to ensure stable performance and long-lasting reliability. This guarantees that your system will run smoothly, even under heavy workloads.

Where DDR5 ECC UDIMM belongs — and where it does not

ECC UDIMM is the memory for the single-socket tier: entry servers, workstation-class desktop boards, and the NAS units built on them. It is unbuffered, so it goes where the controller talks to the DRAM directly — a socket with two or four slots — and it carries the extra 8 bits per subchannel that let the controller detect and correct errors. Above this tier the platforms move to RDIMM; below it, to non-ECC. Both boundaries are worth knowing because the modules on either side do not interchange.

Two platforms that do not take ECC UDIMM, because the question comes up on every order: Threadripper 7000 / 9000 and Threadripper PRO 7000 WX / 9000 WX are 4- and 8-channel RDIMM platforms — TRX50 and WRX90 boards accept RDIMM only, and the slot is keyed to refuse a UDIMM. And Intel consumer chipsets — Z690 / Z790 / Z890, B660 / B760 / B860, H-series — have ECC disabled at the chipset regardless of CPU; an ECC UDIMM fits, posts, and runs as non-ECC. On Intel, ECC needs W680, W880, or a C-series server chipset. On AMD AM5, ECC needs the board vendor to have enabled it; the boards above list it, and most consumer gaming boards do not.

ECC UDIMM versus non-ECC UDIMM versus RDIMM

A DDR5 ECC UDIMM and a non-ECC UDIMM share the 288-pin form factor and key, so either fits either slot. The ECC module is 80 bits wide (two 40-bit subchannels) against 64 (two 32-bit); the extra chips are the side-band ECC the controller uses. In a board that supports ECC, the ECC module runs with correction on; in one that does not, it runs as a plain 64-bit module and the extra chips sit idle. RDIMM is a different part — a register on the command bus, a different key position, and a controller that expects it — and a UDIMM of either kind will not fit an RDIMM slot or the reverse.

On-die ECC is the other thing to be clear about. Every DDR5 chip corrects single-bit errors internally; consumer modules advertise this. It protects the cell array only, the system cannot see it, and it is not what "ECC" means on this page. Side-band ECC on an ECC UDIMM lets the controller detect and correct errors across the bus and log them to the OS and the management controller — which is the reason the platforms above specify it.

Capacities and ranks

Capacity Organization Notes
8GB 1Rx16 Minimum; rarely the right buy at DDR5 prices.
16GB 1Rx8 Entry OEM configuration on Xeon E and Ryzen PRO systems.
24GB 1Rx8 on 24Gb DRAM Non-binary; supported on Raptor Lake, Ryzen 7000 and later. Check the board's QVL.
32GB 2Rx8 (16Gb) or 1Rx8 (32Gb) The workhorse. Two constructions in the market — match the installed one when adding.
48GB 2Rx8 on 24Gb DRAM Non-binary; 192GB in four slots on platforms that list it.
64GB 2Rx8 on 32Gb DRAM 256GB in four slots on W880, AM5 boards with current firmware, and Xeon E-2500-class platforms. Requires BIOS support for 32Gb DRAM — older AM5 and C266 firmware may not train it.

Population rules on a four-slot board

  • Two modules is the fast configuration. Every platform on this page is dual-channel with two slots per channel. One module per channel — two total, in the slots the manual marks A2 / B2 — runs at the rated speed. Four modules is two DIMMs per channel, and every platform lowers the speed for it: AM5 drops to 3600 – 4400 depending on rank, Raptor Lake to 4000 – 4400, Core Ultra to 4800 – 5200. If the capacity fits in two modules, buy two.
  • Matched pairs. Two identical modules for dual-channel; four identical if four. Mixing 1Rx8 and 2Rx8 in a channel forces the lower speed and, on some AM5 firmware, forces JEDEC fallback below it.
  • ECC on, verified. A board that supports ECC usually has it enabled by default once ECC modules are detected, but some AM5 boards expose a BIOS switch. After installing, check the OS (below) — not the BIOS splash — for active correction.
  • The CPU sets the speed. JEDEC 4800 on Raptor Lake, 5200 on Ryzen 7000, 5600 on Ryzen 9000 and 14th Gen, 6400 on Core Ultra and Xeon 6300. A 5600 module in a 4800 platform runs at 4800; there is no XMP or EXPO on an ECC module, and overclocked speeds have no place on a system bought for ECC.
  • Firmware matters for the large modules. 48GB and 64GB modules need a BIOS that knows 24Gb and 32Gb DRAM. On boards shipped before those densities existed, update before installing.

How to check that ECC is actually running

  1. Linux: sudo dmidecode -t memory — the Physical Memory Array section shows Error Correction Type: Multi-bit ECC when ECC is active and None when it is not. edac-util -v or /sys/devices/system/edac/mc/ shows the correction counters once the EDAC driver loads.
  2. Windows: wmic memphysical get MemoryErrorCorrection returns 6 for multi-bit ECC, 3 for none. Task Manager does not show it.
  3. The management controller on server boards — iDRAC, iLO, XCC, or IPMI → Memory — shows ECC status and logs corrected errors per slot.
  4. The module label reads "ECC UDIMM" or carries the E in the part code; a 16GB module with nine or ten chips per side rather than eight is the visual tell.

Reading the part number

Samsung M324 is DDR5 ECC UDIMM (M323 is non-ECC, M321 is RDIMM). Micron MTC…E in the type position — MTC20C2085S1EC48 is 16GB 1Rx8 ECC UDIMM 4800. SK hynix HMCG…U with the ECC width in the code. Kingston Server Premier KSM48E, KSM56E, KSM64E — the E is ECC UDIMM (R would be RDIMM). Supermicro MEM-DR5xxL-xx-EU48 / -EU56; QNAP RAM-xxGDR5ECT0-UD-4800. OEM Dell, HPE, and Lenovo codes are decoded on the manufacturer pages, and the workstation boards are listed under Supermicro, ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, and MSI.

Why ECC on a single-socket machine

The case is the same as on a server, at smaller scale: a machine that runs for months, holds data that is not easily reconstructed, or does work whose result is trusted — a ZFS host, a small hypervisor, a CAD or simulation workstation, a build server, a database on an entry PowerEdge — should know when a bit flips and should correct it rather than silently writing it to disk. The cost over non-ECC is modest on DDR5, and the platforms above are sold for exactly this tier of work.

Why NEMIX RAM DDR5 ECC UDIMM

Every NEMIX RAM DDR5 ECC UDIMM is detailed to Micron, Samsung, or SK hynix DRAM with the PMIC and SPD hub specified for the platform, to the specification of the OEM or board-vendor module it replaces — capacity, rank, organization, JEDEC speed — and run in the platform class it is listed for before it is offered. Frequently asked

Will ECC UDIMM work in my gaming board? It fits and runs, as non-ECC, on Intel consumer chipsets and on AM5 boards that do not enable it. If you want correction active, the board has to be one that lists ECC support.

Can I use ECC UDIMM in a Threadripper? No. Threadripper 7000 / 9000 and PRO WX are RDIMM platforms; the slot will not accept a UDIMM.

Does my Ryzen need a PRO chip for ECC? No — the memory controller on standard Ryzen 7000 / 9000 supports ECC; what varies is whether the board vendor validated and enabled it. PRO is what the large OEMs use because AMD guarantees the feature on those SKUs.

Two 32GB or four 16GB for 64GB? Two 32GB. Same capacity, full speed, and two empty slots for later.

Can I mix ECC and non-ECC UDIMM? The system will post on most boards and run everything as non-ECC. Do not; if you are buying ECC, populate with ECC only.

Does upgrading void the warranty? No. Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Supermicro, and QNAP document memory as customer-installable. Our lifetime warranty covers the module.
